The Education of Dr. Markey

Dr. Daniel Markey

Daniel Markey was Policy planning staff member, South and Central Asia portfolio, U.S. Department of State (2003-2007). He is now a senior fellow for South Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations. It is interesting to listen to the diissolution of Musharraf through the words of Dr. Markey:

Mar 3 2008

Musharraf is a diminished asset. He is exceedingly unpopular. No one disagrees with that. The time has come to really get on sort of the right side of history, essentially for the United States to jump into the future and work with more popular forces in Pakistan

Feb 23 2008

Musharraf is obviously a poison pill. He is fading out.

Sep 17 2007

They (the US) are trying to walk the fine line between pulling away from Gen Musharraf, who they believe has been a good partner, and also trying at the same time to advance what they hope would be more of a transition in the direction of democracy..

Aug 13 2007

Like it or not, Musharraf — or a successor general — will retain the lion’s share of power in the near term, even if national elections install a new government in Islamabad this fall.

June 5 2007

What would Benazir’s return really do to advance things? Probably not much.

May 28 2007

Whatever Musharraf’s flaws, the United States is more comfortable with him than it would be with anyone hoping to take his place.

May 16 2007

If for some reason Musharraf were forced out, we would probably see a return to a situation where you have a relatively weaker president, a stronger prime minister, and a strong army chief who wouldn’t be Musharraf.

The Musharraf government is actually doing the right thing.

Mar 2 2007

The Bush administration, which is now picking holes in the North Waziristan deal signed by Pakistan with tribal leaders, initially backed the decision that was made in consultation with Washington. [Daniel Markey] said in an interview here this week with the Council on Foreign Relations that the US was in accord with Pakistan’s decision. Asked if the Americans sympathised with Musharraf’s approach last year, he said,

“Precisely”

What a difference a year makes..
