The Inauguration Will Be Televised

I come home from a business trip to see a large envelope from the Presidential Inaugural Committee. Inside is a handsome card embossed with a Golden Seal.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee requests the honor of your presence to attend and participate in the Inauguration of

My heart beats faster. Finally, all those blogs I wrote on Daily Kos are paying off. Impassioned arguments with Hillary Clinton supporters back in the Spring of 2008. Alegre, eat your heart out in your little corner. We are the ones going to the Inauguration.

Barack H. Obama as President of the United States of America

Yes. It is almost official. And they are asking me to the party. How wonderful. The wingnuts at can scream all they want.

and Joseph R. Biden as Vice President of the United States of America

When? Where?

on Tuesday, the twentieth of January two thousand and nine in the City of Washington

Yes! But where in the City of Washington should I show up? Could it be the White House itself?

I turn over the thick card. Nothing on the other side. But wait! There is another card. Surely it will tell me where to be on this momentous occasion.

Oh. It says the event will be transmitted live on TV and streamed on a website. So I am being invited to watch the inauguration on TV. Niiice….

I open my email and see many more wonderful opportunities. A personal message from my latest best buddy Barack himself:

Will you make a donation of $100 or more and be part of the historic moment you made possible?

From Jill Biden

Will you help us honor our promise and support our friend Hillary Clinton by making a donation of $100 or more today?

From Michelle Obama

Can you make a donation of $100 or more before midnight on Thursday, January 8th?

From David Plouffe, the elusive manager who pulled off one of the stunning upsets in American political history:

Will you make a donation of $100 or more before midnight tonight? You could be a part of the inaugural events.

From someone named Sabrena Turner, finally a place and address of a “pre-inauguration” event at the Hyatt Regency in Washington. How much? Tucked away at the bottom,

Advance tickets – YOU PAY $125.00 each
If you buy tickets at the door – YOU PAY $175.00 each

The event is open to anyone. Not just to the thirteen million of Barack’s closest friends to whom the email is sent out.

The more things Change the more they remain the Same. Wonder when the solicitations for the Obama Presidential Library will start to arrive.
